Good gum health is important in what we do here, in that some people have what's called gingivitis. Gingivitis is just an inflammation of the gums due to plaque and bacteria getting around the gumline. We remove that here in our office. Sometimes gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease, which is an acceleration of gingivitis, and the breakdown of the actual attachment of the tooth to the gum and the tooth to the bone.
We do provide that kind of therapy called root planing and scaling here in our office, which is the initial therapy or the beginning therapy of treating gum disease. If it progresses to anything further, we do not do surgery here, but I have numerous specialists, periodontists, that I can refer to if a patient cannot completely benefit and get better with the root planing and scaling for their gums.

Get Your Gums Back to Health
Did you know that among Americans ages 30 to 64, 48 percent have some form of gum disease? In its early stages, there are often no visible symptoms – bacteria silently lurks beneath your gumline, building a stronghold of infection.
That’s why regular care from a general dentist at Michael S. Roessler DDS Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is so important. Dr. Roessler and our team will thoroughly inspect your teeth and gums at each checkup so that we can provide treatment if needed to keep your gums in top shape.
The most common treatment for gum disease – and one that most of our patients benefit from – is “deep cleaning” with scaling and root planing. After we determine that your gums are suffering, we’ll get to work restoring them to health.
We’ll first use special tools to scale (or remove) built up tartar and bacteria around and under your gumline. Over time, plaque that you miss when brushing and flossing forms hard tartar that can only be removed at the dentist office.
Next, we’ll plane (or smooth) your tooth roots to make it more difficult for bacteria to re-collect there. This combination of scaling and root planing will eliminate harmful, disease-causing bacteria so that your gums can begin to heal. They’ll soon look better and feel better!
If your gums need help, don’t delay! Our Mundelein gum disease treatment will get them back on track. Call our team today at 847-652-9147 to schedule an exam. Dr. Roessler has more than 30 years of experience keeping his patients smiling!
