May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Did you know that oral health and mental health are connected? Just think about it. When you are stressed, how motivated are you to brush your teeth?

Here are a few ways your state of mind impacts the health of your smile:

  • Neglect of Oral Health Routines – When you skip brushing or flossing your teeth due to stress or a feeling of being overwhelmed, that allows bacteria to grow in your mouth. It can lead to an increase in cavities and gum infections.
  • Grinding or Clenching Your Teeth – Many people grind their teeth when stressed or dealing with difficult emotions. That can flatten your teeth or chip or crack a tooth.
  • Increase in Dry Mouth – Anxiety can lead to dry mouth. When you are not having enough saliva production, you aren’t washing away the bacteria from your mouth.

Fortunately, we can help! We have mouthguards available that will protect your teeth from teeth-grinding habits. Plus, we have solutions if you are struggling with chronic dry mouth

We also wanted to share this video by the ADA that talks a bit more about this connection:
